Medicare Enrollment Periods


Medicare's annual
enrollment period
Oct. 15 to Dec. 7

From Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, people with Medicare can make changes to their coverage for the upcoming year.

Part B enrollment

If you have Medicare Part A but not Part B, the Part B general enrollment period is January 1 through March 31. Your coverage starts the month after you sign up.

Other enrollment periods include:

Medicare Advantage open enrollment period

(Jan. 1 through Mar. 31)

If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can make one change to how you receive your Medicare benefits (for example, by changing from one plan to another or returning to Original Medicare).

Initial enrollment period

(For people new to Medicare)

If you're turning 65 and becoming eligible for Medicare, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan:

  • Up to 3 months before the month of your birthday, with coverage beginning the first day of your birth month
  • The month of your birthday, with coverage beginning the first day of the following month
  • Up to 3 months after the month of your birthday, with coverage beginning the first day of the month following your enrollment

Special enrollment period for chronic condition special needs plans (C-SNPs)

(For people with a qualifying chronic condition)

If you have a qualifying chronic health condition, you may be able to enroll in a chronic condition special needs plan. You can use this enrollment period one time per qualifying condition at any time in the plan year.

Special enrollment period for dual-eligible special needs plans (D-SNPs)

(For people with Medicare and Medicaid)

This period applies if:

  • You had a change in your Medicaid coverage (newly got Medicaid, had a change in level of Medicaid assistance or lost Medicaid)

Other ways you may qualify for an enrollment period include:

 

  • Moved out of your plan's service area
  • Moved in or out of a long-term care facility
  • Were enrolled in a Medicare plan that recently closed
  • Lost coverage through an employer or retiree group
