Meet the Peoples Health Illustrious Alumni
A Peoples Health Illustrious Alumnus applies their experiences and knowledge obtained as a Louisiana State University student to accomplish outstanding achievements. They are community leaders, philanthropists, educators. They are Tiger fans, purple and gold through and through. And their lives are a testament that there are no boundaries to how far an excellent education can take you.

2011 Illustrious Alumnus
In 1968, Roger Ogden graduated with honors from LSU with a Bachelor of Science in business. In 1975, he co-founded Stirling Properties Inc. As a real estate developer and civic leader, Ogden has spearheaded many high-pro le projects, including e Shops at Canal Place and the Loews New Orleans Hotel.
Active in many philanthropic organizations, Ogden donated over 1,000 pieces of art from his personal collection to form the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Currently, he serves as chairman of LSU’s Business Building Oversight Committee and is a member of the LSU Foundation and other organizations. He credits LSU for providing the platform for a lifetime of social, civic and professional relationships that have enriched his life.

A native of Hammond, La., James “Jimmy” Maurin graduated from LSU in 1970, earning a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. ree years later, he began his career as a CPA. In 1975, Maurin co-founded Stirling Properties Inc., with partner Roger Ogden. Today, Stirling Properties is one of the largest real estate companies in the Gulf South. Currently, Maurin serves as its chairman.
Maurin is also the board chairman for Ochsner Health System and the LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation. He is an extreme Tiger fan, having missed only a handful of games in Tiger Stadium over 50 plus years. Maurin credits LSU for his many successes and the lifelong friendships that started there. None of those relationships are more important than the one he shares with his wife of 41 years, Lillian.

Born in Selma, Ala., Richard Lipsey received his Bachelor of Arts in government and history in 1961 from LSU. After graduation, he served two years in the army and later entered the family business, Steinberg’s Sports Center. He became president of the company in 1966. In 1977, he transitioned to chairman of a new business, Lipsey’s, a wholesale sporting goods distributor.
Currently, Lipsey serves on the boards of several LSU colleges and is the founder of the Tiger Athletic Foundation. He is involved in many civic and charitable organizations and attributes his leadership values and skills to his LSU experience.

Born in Carville, La., James Carville, also known as the Ragin’ Cajun, received his undergraduate degree in 1970 and Juris Doctorate in 1973 from LSU. After graduation, he worked as a litigator and joined the Marines. Carville guided Bill
Clinton to the presidency in 1992. A year later, he was honored as Campaign Manager of the Year for his leadership of Clinton’s intense “War Room.”
Following Clinton’s victory, Carville began focusing on international consulting. Named one of the most influential people in public relations of the 20th century, Carville is America’s best-known political consultant and the most quoted political pundit in modern politics. He is also an international campaign consultant, author and restaurateur. Carville is married to Republican strategist Mary Matalin and is the father of two
daughters, Matty and Emma. He has four sisters, one brother and 21 nieces and nephews — all sons and daughters of LSU. Carville credits his days at LSU for giving him the passion to change politics.

Mr. Laborde is a native Louisianian with an extensive military history. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theatre before receiving a Bachelor of Arts in social studies in 1947, a Juris Doctorate in 1949 and an honorary doctorate in 1995—all from LSU. In 1956, he was elected president of Tidewater Marine Service Inc. (now Tidewater Inc.), the first marine company dedicated to servicing the offshore oil and gas industry.
Since retiring he has founded and developed several family businesses. Mr. Laborde credits the depth of his education at LSU for his success in business leadership. Congratulations, John Laborde, our Peoples Health Illustrious Alumnus.
Mr. Lockwood moved to Louisiana to attend LSU, where he received his Bachelor of Science in finance in 1971. During his early years in Louisiana, he fell in love with the state’s swampy backcountry and photography.
Today, C.C. owns a gallery and has published many books showcasing his love for the wetlands and wildlife. He credits his business success to his finance studies at LSU.

2010 Illustrious Alumnus
In 1983, Ms. Tope graduated from LSU with a certificate in education. Her LSU experience provided her the opportunity to speak at local and regional reading conferences, and helped her gain confidence in her teaching abilities.
Ms. Tope has been named Career Educator of the Year and was given the "Breakthrough to the Best" award for excellence in education. She credits this achievement to her outstanding LSU education. Ms. Tope has great affection for LSU and gives back by teaching undergraduate courses at the university.

Mr. Wallace earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from LSU in 1953. He credits his LSU education for the skills to work with people across various industries such as business, space exploration and medical research.
Today, Mr. Wallace is a trustee and officer of the Clayton Foundation for Research and chairs numerous committees, including the Rotary Club and YMCA of Houston. LSU instilled in Mr. Wallace leadership skills that continue to be an invaluable asset in many areas of his life.
In 1962, Dr. Andonie earned his medical degree from LSU Medical School, and is today a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Andonie served in the military and recalls recognizing then that his surgical skills were second to none due to his LSU education.
In addition to being involved in a wide range of medical, civic and educational activities, Dr. Andonie is a long-term supporter of LSU. In 1997, he donated an impressive collection of rare LSU memorabilia to the university with the hope of preserving history for future generations of
LSU alumni.

The Peoples Health Illustrious Alumnus program honored John Butler, its fourth Illustrious Alumnus, on Saturday, October 16 during the LSU Tigers game against McNeese State. A Peoples Health Illustrious Alumnus is a graduate of Louisiana State University age 55 or older who demonstrates the value of their LSU education through a history of civic and personal achievements.
Butler graduated from LSU in 1969 with a degree in Liberal Arts. Through his LSU education, Butler learned the importance of applying oneself to compete in a competitive world. He says that LSU prepared him for a top graduate program where he earned his Ph.D.
Today, Butler holds the Marion West Chair at The University of Texas at Austin and is director of the Institute for Innovation, Creativity and Capital. He supports LSU through service on the Alumni National Board of Directors.

A Louisiana native, Lod earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from LSU in 1950. Five years later, he received a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the university. He credits his education for his rise to chief executive of the world's 7th largest oil company, ARCO. Today, Mr. Cook's philanthropy is focused on educational programs.
Lod's LSU experience provided him with leadership skills that served him well in life after college. It prepared him for a rewarding career and set the stage for a history of achievement.

Kip Holden graduated from LSU in 1974 with a B.A. in Journalism. He credits LSU with the con dence he gained to succeed, to persevere and to communicate with people from all walks of life.
Now in his second term as Mayor-President of Baton Rouge, Kip relies on the skills he developed at LSU to lead Baton Rouge on its continued path of progress and growth. roughout his career, Mayor Holden has worked to improve education and has been honored for his accomplishments. Dr. Mary Lou Applewhite graduated from LSU Medical School in 1955, a time when few women sought a career in medicine. She credits the support of her LSU professors as vital to her success. After completing her studies, Dr. Applewhite went on to become the first woman appointed to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners and was the first woman to train at Charity Hospital in dermatology.
Today, she is the campaign chair for Forever LSU, creating opportunities for excellence.
